Love in Christianity and Islam
Love is the essence of religion, the greatest of God’s commandments in all divine revelations. In Christianity, Christ said:
> “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind. This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself. On these two commandments hang all the Law and the Prophets.” (Matthew 22:37–40)
In Islam, love is equally central. The Prophet ﷺ said:
> “None of you truly believes until he loves for his brother what he loves for himself.” (Narrated by al-Bukhari and Muslim)
The Qur’an declares:
> “Indeed, God loves those who do good.” (Al-Baqarah 2:195)
Thus, love is not merely an emotion, but the very foundation of faith and righteous action. It is the true bond that unites humanity with God and with one another.
As Khalil Gibran beautifully expressed:
> “Love gives nothing but itself, and takes nothing but from itself. Love possesses not, nor would it be possessed; for love is sufficient unto love.”
Therefore, love is the eternal language of God, the flame that cannot be extinguished. It transforms religion into a path of life, not death; of peace, not war; of unity, not division.
